Using a disc sander for cutting Kumiko leaf

In this blog, I will introduce a jig for cutting Kumiko leaves using a disc sander. The structure is simple, so if you have woodworking skills, you can make it by yourself. The plans are also sold in the Shop on this site, so if you need them, please buy them.

This jig was invented by me when I received an order for large Kumiko panels. The size of the panel was 0.5M x 3M, and the number of leaves required was over 3000.

Normally, a Ha-ganna (Specialized hand planes for leaf) is needed to make a product of this scale, but I don't have one, and it is very expensive. A single angle Ha-ganna costs over 1000AUD and it requires three angles. It also takes a long time to adjust, so using a leaf plane was not practical.

However, the usual jig using chisels or hand planes would take too much time, and after searching on the Web, I found someone who was using a disc sander to cut the leaves of the Kumiko. From there, I made a prototype of my own jig with my own ingenuity.

As you can see from the video, it is very efficient. The only drawback is that it leaves a little bit of wood fibers after sanding, but it can be easily removed with sandpaper.

This is a useful jig for those who need a lot of parts, so please refer to it.
